Dr. Frank James named Provost of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

Dr. Frank A. James III, Professor of Historical Theology and a former President of the Orlando, Florida campus of Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS), has been named Provost of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, effective June 1, 2009.

Dr. James also served for three years as Chief Academic Officer and Vice President for Academic Affairs at RTS, where he was responsible for the academic programs of the seminary’s campuses in Jackson, MS; Charlotte, NC; Orlando; Atlanta, GA; Boca Raton, FL; Memphis, TN; and Washington, DC. In addition, he has served as Assistant Professor of Systematic and Historical Theological at Westmont College, Santa Barbara, CA, and as Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Central Florida.

He was a co-founder in 1998 of Ad Fontes, LLC, a for-profit educational-technology company, and in 2006 co-founded the Polis Project, an initiative in Orlando, FL, dedicated to urban renewal. For 12 years, he served as a regular Visiting Professor of Reformation History at the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Keble College, Oxford University, England. He has been a guest lecturer or guest professor at seminaries in the Czech Republic, Turkey and Canada.

Dr. James holds a D.Phil. degree in Modern History from Oxford University and an M.A. in Religion and Ph.D. in Historical and Theological Studies from Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA.

Commenting on the new Provost, President Dr. Dennis P. Hollinger noted, “Dr. Frank James brings to Gordon-Conwell a wealth of leadership experience, an exceptional record in scholarship, and relational skills that will serve the seminary well. His deep personal faith in Christ, combined with commitments to embodying faith in the realities of everyday life and culture, provide the balance seminaries need for the 21st century.

“Frank has worked with a multi-campus structure in his previous leadership roles and understands well the unique delivery systems of Gordon-Conwell. I look forward to a wonderful working relationship with Frank and believe that he will do an outstanding job leading our faculty and the academic programs of the seminary.”
A recipient of 12 academic awards, Dr. James has been a Contributing Editor to Christian History Magazine, Contributing Editor and Scriptwriter for an historical documentary film series produced by Gateway Films, and a freelance editor for Zondervan Publishing Company. He is on the Editorial Board of Reformation Commentary on Scripture, and is General Editor of two Peter Martyr Library series and Editorial Advisor for a theological journal in Romania.

He has written, co-edited or edited six books; has written scores of articles for encyclopedias, scholarly journals and popular publications; and has given numerous lectures in the U.S. and other countries.
He was a gubernatorial appointee to the Commission on Independent Education for the State of Florida, and was appointed by the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives to a Compassion in Action Roundtable on “Faith-Based and Community Solutions to Combat Human Trafficking.” He is a participant in Evangelicals and Catholics Together of the Institute on Religion and Public Life.

Dr. James and his wife, Carolyn, have one adult daughter.
